Joseph Fowler was born in Compton, Berkshire in 1886 and attested for the Royal Berkshire Regiment on 29 March 1904. He served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 27 August 1914, and was wounded in action at Zonnebeke on 24 October 1914, being repatriated to England four days later. He was discharged, no longer physically fit for war service, on 1 October 1915 and was awarded a Silver War Badge.
