Charles John Walford Meadows was born on 14 January 1844. Training at Guy’s and Westminster Hospitals, he took the L.S.A. in 1866, M.R.C.S. in 1867 and S.S.C. Cantab. in 1882. Appointed an Assistant Surgeon with the Bengal Medical Establishment on 1 October 1869, Surgeon on 1 July 1873 and Surgeon-Major on 1 October 1881, he attained the rank of Brigade Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel on 1 April 1895.

He served with the Right Column in the Looshai Expedition, in medical charge of the Peshawur Mountain Battery, Royal Artillery, and 3rd Co. Bengal Sappers & Miners. He was also in charge of that portion of the Coolie Corps employed at the front. Frequently in temporary charge (during the absence of P.M.O. Surgeon-Major F. F. Allen on other duty) of the Brigade Staff & 2nd Ghoorkas, he was present at most of the operations and was favourably mentioned in despatches (GGO 480 of 1872).

Lieutenant-Colonel Meadows died at Norwood on 2 August 1899, from the effects of an accident when he was knocked down by a bicycle. Sold with full research.
