Samuel Bristow was born in Belfast in January 1858 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July 1873. An Able Seaman by the time of his service in H.M.S. Penelope (January to November 1882), he was sentenced to 28 days in Lewes gaol on his return to the U.K., and again fell foul of the civil authorities in November 1883, this time being jailed for a month - he was duly dismissed the service; sold with a file of research, including copied service record.
