Joseph Sturch was born in Chatham in July 1858 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in January 1868. A Leading Stoker by the time of his service in H.M.S. Penelope (May 1882 to August 1884), he removed to the Monarch in the latter month and was among those employed in the Nile Flotilla in February-June 1885. Sturch was pensioned ashore in July 1888; sold with a file of research, including copied service record and family history, etc.
