Roderick Macauley Bernard Needham was born on 28 December 1879. A Bank Clerk by occupation, he attested for the Imperial Yeomanry aged 20 years. Served as a Trooper in the 47th (Lord Donoughmore’s) Company 13th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry and was taken prisoner at Lindley, 31 May 1900. Served as a Lieutenant in Bethune’s Mounted Infantry, was awarded the King’s medal with two clasps and was mentioned in despatches. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Suffolk Regiment on 23 July 1902 and was promoted to Lieutenant in April 1905, Captain in February 1914 and Major in May 1916. In the Great War he served in France/Flanders, October 1914-November 1915 and Greek Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, European Turkey and the islands of Aegean, November 1915-November 1918, for which he was four time mentioned in despatches, created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order and was awarded the brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel.
