Sydney Harold Philpott was born in Weymouth, Dorset in January 1891 and enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps in August 1915. Advanced to Corporal in December 1916 and to Sergeant in October 1917, he was mentioned in Allenby’s despatch dated 3 April 1918, for services at G.H.Q., Egyptian Expeditionary Force. Philpott was re-mustered as a Sergeant (Clerk) in the newly established Royal Air Force in the same month and was demobilised in August 1919; accompanying research refers.
