Samuel Simkin enlisted into the 47th Foot on 13 May 1812, a volunteer from the West Sussex Militia. He served with the 2nd Battalion in the Peninsula at the battle of Vittoria, the siege and assault of St Sebastian, and the battles of Nivelle and Nive. He was taken prisoner at St Jean de Luz on 10 December 1813, and remained a prisoner of the French until some time after October 1814. At the end of 1815 he transferred to the 1st Battalion, and on 2 October 1816, he transferred to the Rifle Brigade, serving with the Army of Occupation in France, and later in Ireland and at Malta. He was discharged on 13 March 1829. Sold with muster roll details.
