Whalley Master was born at Walcot, Somerset, on 26 October 1808, fourth son of Captain James Master, R.N. He was appointed a Cornet in the Bengal Army on 27 June 1826, and arrived in India on 22 October 1826, to duty with the 1st Bengal Light Cavalry. He was subsequently posted to the 10th Light Cavalry but transferred to the 7th Light Cavalry on 8 May 1827. He served in the Shekhawat Expedition in 1835, with the Army of Reserve Fenian Raid Afghanistan, October 1842 to January 1843, with the Sind Frontier Force in 1846, and with the Army of the Punjab in 1848. He transferred to the Invalid Establishment at his own request from 11 December 1848, to reside at Jullundur, and retired as Honorary Major on 17 September 1846. Major Master died in London on 12 October 1862. Sold with a comprehensive file of research detailing the naval and military careers of nine members of the Master family.
