James Walkden was born at Blackburn, Lancaster, and enlisted there for the 12th Brigade on 11 September 1876. Posted to the 81st Foot, he joined the regiment in Jersey five days later. He served in India from November 1877 to February 1883, and served in Afghanistan, November 1878 to January 1879, including the capture of Ali Musjid. He was discharged at Preston, on termination of his first period of limited engagement, on 11 September 1888.
