After service during the Boer War, Walter Johnson re-enlisted on 18 August 1914. With the 10th Battalion Hampshire Regiment he entered the Balkan theatre of war on 22 July 1915. He was discharged due to wounds on 9 March 1916 and awarded the Silver War Badge. With copied m.i.c. and roll extract.
