Only eight awards of the C.S.C. were made, all to officers of the Royal Navy, for services in South Africa, China and Somaliland in the period 1901-04. In October 1914 the Cross was re-designated ‘The Distinguished Service Cross’ and thereafter issued with the cypher of King George V.
