Francis English was born in London in December 1827 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Rodney in July 1846. Gaining advancement to Able Seaman aboard the Vulcan in September 1854, he witnessed active service in the Crimea War, including the Sebastopol operations. English was appointed a Quarter-Master in March 1861 and was pensioned ashore from the Liverpool in July 1867, in which month he received his L.S. & G.C. Medal.
