George Dowrick was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in February 1851.
He was born at St. Just, Cornwall and joined the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman aboard the brig H.M.S. Kingfisher in December 1825, a rate that would suggest he had gained at least two years experience of the sea elsewhere, probably as a fishing fleet man. His subsequent career was spent entirely aboard similar 8-gun brigs, all of which operated in home waters out of Falmouth, and he was discharged ashore from the Linnet in early 1851. Eight years later, however, he rejoined as a ‘Pensioner’ with the rate of Able Seaman aboard the Asia, coming ashore for a final time in January 1862.
