Richard Hunter was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in October 1862.
He was born in Devonport in January 1814 and joined the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman aboard the Malabar in January 1838. Advanced to Able Seaman during his time aboard the Implacable between 1839-42, in which ship he was present in the Syria operations of 1840, Hunter was further advanced to Captain of the Mast in the Simoom in February 1852. Having participated in the Crimea operations aboard the latter ship, he was finally pensioned ashore from the Exmouth in late 1862.
