William Lewis Gwilliam was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in April 1873.
He was born at Freystrop, Pembrokeshire in May 1835 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Saturn in October 1849. Advanced to Leading Seaman in July 1860, he joined the recently launched - and revolutionary ironclad - Warrior in the following year, and remained in her until removing to the Blenheim in April 1863. Gwilliam was finally pensioned ashore from the Impregnable in early 1873.
