Charles John Godfrey Saunders was born on 15 February 1888, the son of the Rev. S. T. H. Saunders, Rector of St. Helen’s, Bishopsgate. He was educated at Merchant Taylors’ School, St. John’s College, Oxford and Cuddesdon College. Gained a B.A. (3rd Cl. Th. Hon.) and Hall Houghton Septuagint (Jun.) Prize 1909, and M.A. 1916. Ordained a Deacon in 1911 and Priest in 1912. With the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel at Cawnpore, 1911-16; Chaplain, Roorkee, 1917; Chaplain, Cawnpore, 1918; Chaplain, Chakrata, 1921; Staff Chaplain, Army HQ India, 1921-25; Metropolitan’s Chaplain, Calcutta, 1925-28; and Bishop of Lucknow, 1928-38. Returning to England, he was appointed Rector of Uckfield, 1938-42; Rector of Barcombe, 1942-47; and Vicar of West Lavington, Midhurst, 1947-53. Served as Assistant Bishop Diocese of Chichester, 1939-53. On the Staff of St. Matthew’s Church, Moorfields, Bristol, as Assistant to Chaplain of Bristol Royal Infirmary, 1953-1958; Chaplain to the Lord Mayor of Bristol, 1961-65. Grand Chaplain of England 1940. Latterly living in Bristol, he died on 16 October 1973. With some copied research.
