Walter MacPhail was born in Cummings Ridge, Ontario on 2 June 1897. A Toll Keeper by occupation, he attested for service in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Ottawa on 29 February 1916. He was taken on the strength of the 77th (Ottawa) Battalion Canadian Infantry where he served as a Piper with the Battalion Pipe Band. With the battalion he arrived in England in June 1916. After service in various units he went to France in March 1917 where he served with the 4th Labout Battalion and the 11th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops. In November 1918, suffering from influenza he was invalided to England. MacPahail embarked for home in February 1919 and was discharged at Ottawa on 17 March 1919. Following his discharge MacPhail jointed the Ottawa Cameron Highlanders; renamed in 1933 to the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. He served as Piper with the regiment and was awarded the Efficiency Medal. With copied service papers, research and copied photographs.
