Private Joseph Maxwell Staples, 1st South African Infantry, was killed in action on 10 April 1918, aged 27 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was the son of William James and Martha Johanna Staples, of 97 Parliament Street, Port Elizabeth, Cape Province, South Africa.
