William Baillie (later Sir, 1st Baronet of Polkemmet) was born in the Parish of St Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh, eldest son of William Baillie, Lord Polkemmet, and Margaret his wife, daughter of Sir James Colquhoun of Loss, 4th Baronet. He was a Bengal Cadet in the season 1798 and arrived in India on 19 August 1799, being appointed Cornet on 6 June 1800, and posted to the 4th Bengal Native Cavalry. He took part in the operations in Jumna Doab in 1803, including Sasni, Bijaigarh and Kachaura; and in the Second Mahratta war, including the actions at Allighur and Laswarree. He went on furlough from 14 February 1813 until struck off after five years’ absence from India. Having married, 25 April 1815, Mary Lyon, youngest daughter of James Denistoun, of Coograin, Dunbartonshire, he was created First Baronet of Polkemmet on 14 November 1823. Sir William Baillie died at Perth on 28 January 1854.
