Frederick Newport was born in February 1891, and was a native of Broughton Lees, Kent. He enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in July 1915, and advanced to Able Seaman in October of the same year. He served during the Great War with Anson Battalion as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Alexandria and Mudros. Newport served with the Battalion as part of the B.E.F. in the French theatre of war from May 1916. He was promoted Leading Seaman in September 1918, and transferred to the 17th Corps School. Newport was discharged in February 1919.
