David Barry was born in the parish of Kerrymuir, Forfarshire, in 1779 and enlisted into the Royal Artillery at Paisley, Lanark, in April 1799. He served during the Peninsula campaigns in Trelawney’s and Powers’ Companies, and was discharged in October 1818, on reduction of the forces.
