Leonard Archibald Ireland first went to France as a 2nd Corporal in the Royal Engineers in July 1915. Subsequently commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment in March 1916, he was awarded the M.C. and mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 4 January 1917, refers).
