D.C.M. London Gazette 11 March 1916:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and energy in carrying despatches and ammunition on several occasions under heavy fire.’
James McHaffie was born in Neilston, Renfrewshire, and attested for the Royal Scots Fusiliers at Pollokshaws, Glasgow. He served with the 7th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 10 July 1915, was advanced Sergeant, and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He was killed in action during the battle of the Somme on 13 October 1916, on which date the Battalion was in a forward area in the Le Sars sector, and is buried in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, France.
