Sutlej 1845-46, for Ferozeshuhur 1845, 1 clasp, Sobraon (George Newall, 62nd Regt.) edge bruising, contact marks, nearly very fine £400-£500

George Newall was born in King’s Sombourne, Stockbridge, Hampshire, in 1823 and attested for the 62nd (Wiltshire) Regiment on 7 September 1842. He served with the Regiment in India and saw action in the First Sikh War at Ferozeshuhur, 21-22 December 1845, and at Sobraon, 10 February 1846. When the regiment returned to England, Newall volunteered to remain in India with the 24th Regiment. With them he saw further action in the Second Sikh War and in the battle of Chilianwala, 12 January 1849, he received a severe gunshot wound to his left thigh. Newall was discharged to an ‘out-pension’ on 22 July 1851; he died as an ‘in-pensioner’ at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, on 13 November 1896.
