Albert J. Jarvis attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment and served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western front from 12 August 1914. He was discharged on 30 April 1915, and received a Silver War Badge.
Arthur Young was born in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, and attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment at Haywards Heath, Sussex. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 4 January 1915, was advanced Acting Sergeant, and was awarded the Military Medal (London Gazette 3 June 1916). He was killed in action during the battle of the Somme on 9 September 1916, on which date the battalion was involved in an attack on the German trenches at High Wood- advancing steadily, in spite of very heavy artillery and machine gun fire, they reached their objective and took several Germans prisoner. Battalion casualties that day were 6 officers and 43 other ranks killed, and 4 officers and 146 other ranks wounded. Young was amongst those killed; he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
William Thomas Carter was born in Northiam, Sussex, in 1890 and attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment at Hastings, Sussex. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 4 January 1915, and was killed in action on 29 January 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, France.
