John Phelan was born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1841 and enlisted at Cardiff into the 28th Foot on 3 November 1864. Whilst serving in India he transferred to the 106th Foot in March 1869, and to the 109th Foot in August 1873. He transferred again, this time into the 94th Foot on 10 February 1879, serving with the regiment in the Zulu War. He also served in the Transvaal War of 1880-81 and was present in the defence of Fort Mary, Lydenburg. He was discharged on 29 April 1891, after 26 years 173 days service.
