Robert Cowell was born in Birmingham and enlisted into the 6th Foot at Coventry on 9 October 1839, aged 18, a slater by trade. He served abroad at the Cape of Good Hope 11 years 7 months, during which time he participated in the Kaffir Wars of 1846-47 and 1850-53. and He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with £5 gratuity on 13 December 1859, and was discharged at his own request, Free to Pension, after 21 years service on 6 November 1860. Sold with a 6th Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead and copied discharge papers.
