John Bennet was born in the Parish of St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, and enlisted into the 91st Regiment on 20 April 1829, joining the regiment on 19 May at Londonderry. He was stationed at St Helena in 1835-39, and then at the Cape of Good Hope from September 1839. He was detached to Colesburg from January 1843 to June 1844, then at Fort Brown until June 1847. He returned to England in March 1848 in the William Melville, and was discharged ‘Invalid’ at Chatham on 16 May 1850. Sold with a 91st Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead and detailed muster research.
