William Claridge was born in the Parish of Stroud, Gloucestershire, and enlisted there into the Rifle Brigade on 15 November 1832, aged 20, a labourer by trade. He served abroad at Malta and the Ionian Islands for 5 years 7 months, and at the Cape of Good Hope for 3 years 7 months, ‘in the Kaffir War of 1846-7 and [was] present in the action against the Transvaal Boers at Boem Plaats on 27 August 1848.’ He was discharged at Chatham in consequence of chronic rheumatism, aged 41, on 22 November 1853. Sold with copied discharge papers.
