Charles Norgate was born at Hethersett, Norfolk, on 3 December 1805, and was nominated a Cadet in 1825 and appointed Ensign on 5 November. He arrived in India on 16 May 1826 and was posted to the 18th Bengal Native Infantry, becoming Lieutenant, 24 July 1826, and Captain, 3 September 1839. He served in the Second Sikh War, in garrison at Lahore (Medal). Promoted to Major on 3 April 1852, he retired on 31 January 1853, receiving his final promotion to Hon. Lieutenant-Colonel on 28 November 1854. He died at Hethersett on 8 February 1864.
