Richard Homan was promoted Corporal on 1 July 1845; Sergeant, 13 May 1850; Colour-Sergeant, 25 February 1854; Sergeant-Major, 13 May 1859. He served, successively, in Australia, India, Burma, U.K., Cape of Good Hope, India, and U.K. He is additionally entitled to the I.G.S. for Pegu, Indian Mutiny medal without clasp and, possibly, the L.S. & G.C. medal.
