South Africa 1834-53 (Wm. Hunt. 2nd Regt.) edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise nearly very fine £280-£320

William Hunt was born in the Parish of East Stratton, near Winchester, Hampshire, and attested for the 2nd Queen’s Regiment at Winchester on 3 September 1846, aged 20, a labourer by trade. He served abroad at the Cape of Good Hope for 7 years 8 months, taking part in the Kaffir War in 1851-53. He was discharged at Chatham on 11 September 1867, at his own request, Free with Pension, after completing 21 years service. His conduct was described as ‘Very Good. He is in possession of five Good Conduct Badges, also in possession of a Good Conduct Medal without Gratuity, and the Kaffir War Medal of 1851-2-3.’ Sold with a 2nd Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead, copied discharge papers and other research.
