Henry Cockburn was appointed Ensign in the 2/60th Rifles on 10 November 1848; Lieutenant, 22 June 1853; Captain, 23 June 1859. He received a medal for the Kaffir War of 1850-53, retired by the sale of his commission in 1859, and was appointed Adjutant of the 2nd West Riding of Yorkshire Rifle Volunteers (Hallamshire Rifles) on 14 May 1860 (London Gazette 24 August 1860).
