Walter McFarlane originally enlisted into the 42nd Foot and transferred to the 74th Foot after that regiment’s losses in the Brikenhead disaster on 26 February 1852. He participated in the final year of the Kaffir War of 1850-53 and then moved to India with the regiment for participation inn the Indian Mutiny (Medal - sold by Spink in July July 2005). He died of dysentery whilst stationed at Bellary on 16 October 1858. Sold with a 74th Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead, and further research.
