James Skinner was born in the Parish of St Mary’s, Nottingham, and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Daventry on 8 October 1839, aged 18 years 7 months. He served abroad in Malta and the Ionian Islands for 5 years 7 months, and at the Cape of Good Hope for 5 years 6 months, taking part in the Kaffir Wars of 1846-47 and 1850-53, and was present in the action against the Basuto Chief Moshesh at the battle of the Berea on 20 December 1852. He did not accompany the regiment to the Crimea and was discharged at Winchester on 16 November 1860, after 21 years 41 days service and having been awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with Gratuity of £5. Sold with copied discharge papers.
