Owen Fearnley was born in Mile End, London in June 1870. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in May 1886. Fearnley was posted as a Sick Berth Attendant to Haslar Hospital in June 1888, and he advanced to Sick Berth Steward in June 1893. Subsequent service included in H.M.S. Alecto, March 1897 - April 1898 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in October 1907). Fearnley served the entirety of the Great War as a Chief Sick Berth Steward at Chatham Naval Hospital, and was eventually invalided from service.
