James Sykes was born at Mitcham, Surrey, and enlisted into the Yorkshire Regiment in London on 16 February 1886. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion in January 1887, was promoted to Corporal in August 1891, and Sergeant in January 1894. He served in India from December 1889 to November 1892, and in Burma from November 1892 to October 1895. Sold with copied discharge papers and medal roll confirmation.
