John Baker was born in the Parish of Peterstone, near Newport, Monmouth, and enlisted into the 4th Foot at Bristol on 1 April 1809. He was discharged on 12 November 1827, in consequence of ‘being weak and worn out and a bad marcher. Has been in nine general actions and four times wounded.’ Baker was allowed to reckon an additional two years for service at the battle of Waterloo.
The 4th Foot arrived in America in August 1814, where they fought at Bladensburg, Washington and Baltimore, and, in 1815, at New Orleans, Fort Bowyer and Mobile, returning to Flanders in time for Waterloo. Sold with copy discharge papers.
