Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (1234. 2nd Corpl. W. Smith. A. H. Corps) edge bruising, good very fine £80-£100

William Smith was born in Liverpool, in 1840 and attested for the 68th Foot from the 2nd Lancashire Regiment of Militia in February 1958, before transferring to the 85th Foot in July 1861. He again transferred to the Army Hospital Corps in December 1862. He was promoted 2nd Corporal in the A.H.C., on 1 March 1876 and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in December 1876. He was discharged at his own request in July 1881, at Edinburgh after 23 years and 119 days’ service.
