33 medals to the 40th Foot with reverse date for 1864.

James McGarty was born in the Parish of Mohill, County Leitrim, and attested for the 40th Regiment at Longford on 14 December 1861, aged 19, a schoolmaster by trade. He arrived in New Zealand in January 1864 and was subsequently present in the actions of Paterangi, Orakau and Wairari during that year. After a period as Sergeant Major of the 14th Brigade Depot at Orford Barracks, Warrington, McGarty was transferred to the Royal Irish Rifles and commissioned as Quartermaster in June 1882. He was placed on the retired list on 22 August 1883.
