William Edward Rhoades was born in Reading, Berkshire, in 1876 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Winchester on 14 March 1901. He served with the 50th (Hampshire) Company, 17th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 24 March 1901 to 29 July 1902, and was discharged on 5 August 1902.
