Winnie Alice Elizabeth Harrison took her nursing studies at the Royal Isle of Wight Hospital in Ryde from 1926 to 1929 and registered as SRN No. 56043 on 28 March 1930. Commissioned as Sister in Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve on 1 March 1943, she was posted to the Hospital Ship St. David and was aboard her on 24 January 1944 when attacked by enemy aircraft. Although well marked and lit in accordance with the Geneva Convention, the St. David was struck aft on the port side and sank in around 6 minutes; 55 people were lost, including Sister Harrison.
