John Edward Lavington Rice was born in Southampton in 1875 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Winchester on 12 February 1901, having previously served with the 2nd Hampshire Volunteer Battalion. He served with the 50th (Hampshire) Company, 17th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 24 March 1901 to 29 July 1902, and was discharged on 5 August 1902.
