Simpson Henderson was born in Edinburgh, and attested for the 42nd Foot at the city in October 1864, aged 19, a paper maker by trade. He advanced to Colour Sergeant in August 1874. Henderson was discharged on 9 June 1886, having served 21 years and 241 days with the Colours.
