Alfred Ashley was born in Bethnal Green, Middlesex, in March 1868. He joined the Royal Navy as a Bandsman in June 1882, and advanced to Bandmaster in November 1895. Subsequent service included with H.M.S. Repulse from November 1895 to September 1901 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in April 1901). Ashley was discharged in November 1907.
