John Crombie was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, and attested there for the Royal Highlanders. He served with the 8th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 1916, and was killed in action on 12 October 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
