D.C.M. London Gazette 17 July 1917:

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When all the officers had become casualties he took charge of the remains of the company and succeeded in capturing and holding a village in spite of heavy artillery and machine gun fire.’
Annotated gazette states: ‘Rouex, 23 April 1917.’

James Walker was born in Glasgow in 1892 and was a machinist when he enlisted into the 7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Territorial Force) in 1913, declaring three years’ previous service with the 7th H.L.I. He landed in France on 15 December 1914, and served with the 7th A. & S.H. throughout the War and remained in service up to the Second World War. In August 1939 he was posted to the 12th (Home Service) Battalion of the A. & S.H.
