George Arthur Rutter was born at Shepherd’s Bush, London, in September 1898. During the Great War he served with 2/5 and 2/8 Battalions of the Manchester Regiment. He was reported as missing on 21 March 1918, the first day of the German Spring Offensive, but later confirmed as having been taken Prisoner of War at Hargicourt on the same day. After demobilisation from the army he commenced service in the Royal Navy on a short service engagement as Acting Stoker 1st Class on 28 April 1919, serving initially in H.M.S. Pembroke II. He was confirmed as Stoker 1st Class, H.M.S. Erebus on 17 July 1919, and later served in H.M.S. Pembroke I and H.M.S. Titania. He was discharged to shore time expired from H.M.S. Pembroke II on 27 April 1924, joining the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day. On discharge his character was described as ‘inferior to very good’. He was awarded the Royal Fleet Reserve Long Service Medal in May 1936.
