Victor Phillips was born in Kimberley in 1887, the son of Edward Phillips of 508 Point Road, Durban. He attested for the 1st South African Infantry at Potchefstroom in September 1915 and embarked from Southampton to Rouen on 31 March 1918. Initially recorded as missing in action during the German Spring Offensive, his papers add: ‘accepted as dead, 12.4.18.’ Aged 31 years, Phillips is commemorated upon the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
