John Griffiths was born in Wrexham, Denbighshire, and attested for the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Westminster on 18 February 1880, aged 24 years 9 months, a collier by trade. He served in India from 16 August 1880 to 13 April 1887, including Burma from 2 November 1885 to 22 November 1886 (Medal and clasp). He was discharged on 17 February 1892.
